We continue with the presentation of the host cities of UEFA Euro 2024 and this time we will talk about Frankfurt, German Manhattan, the city with the busiest airport, the city of banks, the city with the largest car and book fairs in the world.
Frankfurt – German Manhattan
Frankfurt is the fifth largest city in Germany with about 800,000 inhabitants. This city has the busiest airport in Germany, and in front of this airport in terms of traffic are the airports in Paris and London. Annually, 56,000,000 pass through the airport in this city. The organizers of the upcoming Euro strive to organize the most sustainable championship ever and to focus on environmental protection.
Because of this intention, they want fans to use the plane as little as possible and to use other means of transport instead. Frankfurt was once the center of Germany where some German emperors were crowned. During the Second World War, this city was almost razed to the ground, but the city was rebuilt and is considered one of the richest cities today.
Frankfurt is the golden heart of the European Union and is home to the European Central Bank. This city is the main financial center in Europe and it is home to a handful of banks, which is why this city also has a banking district. The most important stock exchange in Germany is located in Frankfurt. Because of the banks and the stock market, but also because of the appearance of the city, it is nicknamed Manhattan. In one part of the city, you can see a handful of skyscrapers that will make you think you are in New York.
The list of tallest skyscrapers in Europe includes several buildings from Frankfurt. The Messetrum tower was built in 1990, and in that decade the construction of skyscrapers was still in its infancy. This building is located in the very center of Frankfurt and is a landmark of the city. The Commerzbank building is the tallest in Frankfurt with a height of 259 meters and 65 floors. Two decades ago, this building was declared the tallest skyscraper in Europe. The other tall buildings in Frankfurt are equally fascinating.
Frankfurt is known for the world’s largest car fair, which is called the Frankfurt Motor Show. Every year, the latest models of the world’s largest car manufacturers, as well as very luxurious vehicles, can be seen at the fair. In addition to this festival, the largest book fair in the world – the Frankfurter Buchmesse – is held every fall. Frankfurt is also known for a handful of other fairs such as lighting, textile, Christmas decorations, interior design, music industry, visual communication, and meat industry fairs.
Frankfurt is not a very big city and on one weekend you can visit all the sights in this city. When you come to Frankfurt you should visit the house of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, creator of the widely known Faust. This writer was born in Frankfurt. The house of the German Shakespeare was destroyed during the bombing in 1944, but seven years later the house was restored and turned into a museum.
If you want to feel the spirit of the 18th century and romanticism, then a visit to the house where Goethe was born and grew up is a must. Opposite the aforementioned modern architecture, dominated by skyscrapers, is the old part of the city of Romemberg. Fairs, numerous festivals, and public executions were held on the square in Romemberg for centuries.
The town hall has been located there since the beginning of the last century and local politicians sit in it today. The Royal Hall, which was once used for banquets and coronations, is open for visitors. The facades of the three-story buildings in Frankfurt show the history of Germany and Frankfurt, and the mosaic of the Phoenix, a bird that is a symbol of renewed Frankfurt, attracts special attention. The main church in Frankfurt is St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral, which was built in the middle of the last millennium.
This cathedral is considered imperial because it was in it from the 16th to the 18th century that numerous German emperors were crowned. The tower of this church has a height of 95 meters, but visitors can only go up to 66 meters. The first democratically elected parliament in Germany was located in Frankfurt in the church of St. Paul. It is a Protestant church that dates back to the time of the French Revolution.
Over time, this church replaced its political function with the basic function that all churches have, which is worship, but it still represents a symbol of democracy in Germany. The first German constitution after World War II was based on the original Paulskirche model. In Frankfurt, you can visit many museums. The largest natural history museum in Germany is located in this city. Dinosaur skeletons can be seen in it. The historical museum is located in the heart of the old part of the city overlooking the Main.
Frankfurt was the second city with the largest number of Jews in Germany, and the famous Anne Frank was born in that city. Quite logically, a museum dedicated to the Holocaust is also located in this city. The Stedel Art Institute is also located in this city, and the architectural and film museums are located nearby. One of the once-largest opera houses is also located in Frankfurt.
This city is also adorned with a fortress named Eschenheimer Turm, untouched since the 15th century. Frankfurt is considered a green city because 50 percent of its territory is made up of parks and greenery. The main shopping street is the Zeil, which is the German version of Fifth Avenue. The most luxurious street in Frankfurt is Goethestrasse and it has many prestigious shops.
If you want to enjoy a good shop then you have to walk through Fressgasse. Fans will definitely want to enjoy the nightlife, and the best place for that is Kaiserstrasse, which has a large number of pubs and cafes.
As for football, the most famous club in this city is Eintracht. This team is one of the most stable clubs in Germany and has experienced a real renaissance in the last few years. They managed to win the Europa League two seasons ago and to play in the Champions League the following season. During its history, this team was the champion of Germany only once. The symbol of this club, as well as of the whole of Frankfurt, is the phoenix on the club’s coat of arms. This team plays at Deutsche Bank Park, which holds around 58,000 spectators.
